Solar drying technology has been used successfully to reduce postharvest losses from a wide range of crops, including fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, nuts, spices, herbs, mushrooms, tea leaves, coffee beans, cocoa beans, sugarcane bagasse, cottonseed hulls, rice husks, and other by-products of agriculture and forestry. Only a few of studies have been conducted to evaluate its efficacy in comparison to other kinds of foodstuffs or even various sized units.
However, there have only been a few studies conducted to evaluate its potential as a scale-up alternative technique for drying fish. But we have successfully used Solar Dryer Tents from big solar tent drier to dry tiny fish species. In the Mekong Delta area of southern Vietnam, a solar drier is enabling fisherman to sell more dried fish than they ever have before. The fact that a basic design might be constructed and provide effective results has proven its feasibility. We were able to complete a number of projects using this particular kind of solar dryer. We learned from our experience that the size of the model is proportional to the number of fishes that are processed each day. As an example, while processing 100 kg/day, a bigger model is required in comparison to when processing 50 kg/day.
